Template Update, Version 2.1.8
Written by Wordsmith
Version 2.1.8, for all Purple Iris Design templates, is now available in the download area. If you purchased a Single Template or Designer's Subscription, login then click on the My Downloads link to find the latest update.

The templates administration area was a bit slower in loading than we like, when using Firefox. Firefox has been working on an update but we've rewritten some of the template code to make them load in less than half the previous time.

The highlights of this version are:

  • Further optimized backend to improve loading on Firefox/all browsers.

  • Font previews in drop-downs.*

  • Font Size previews in drop-downs.*

  • Font Style previews in drop-downs.*

  • Changed Page Class Suffix wording to Theme.

  • Improved backend layout to boost usability/understanding of activatable parameters.

  • Various other minor changes.

* Works best on Firefox to a lesser extent on Chrome, Safari and others.

To update simply install the new 2.1.8 package. You don't need to uninstall older template packages as the installer will automatically update old templates, preserving your custom themes, or install if you haven't installed before.

Flux and Focus Are Back
Written by Wordsmith
The Flux and Focus templates are now available in the Designer's download area and for sale in the shop. They have been ported over to the new Generation 2 template code. We will be adding more headers and textures in the future.

As requested, we have added a Suggestion board to the forum and look forward to seeing your template ideas.

Please note that from August 11th through the 14th we may not answer your forum posts or emails as fast as usual. There is a rogue satellite that will be passing by our Internet Service Provider's satellite, that may disrupt our service from 1 to 5 hours at a time. Purple Iris Design's website will not be affected so please post your questions and we'll answer as soon as possible.

Generation 2 - Awesome New Template Framework
Written by Wordsmith
ImpressionsOver the past months we’ve been developing, Generation 2, a very versatile, feature rich framework for our templates. Hundreds of hours later, Generation 2 is finally done and available in our shop and the Designer’s download area.

We’ve added many new features to help you better customize your websites. All of the new features work in all of our templates. You can now use different templates in different areas of the website, change multiple colors on each template, use the built in gradients as well as add textures to backgrounds. Custom headers can easily be added and height and widths set for modules. This is only a glimpse of the new features that have been added. Of course, we’ve kept all of our wonderful original features also.

Each template now contains all of the template themes. So when you buy one template you’re actually getting twenty to thirty templates rolled into one.

Let’s use the Impressions template series for an example. All thirty themes are included in one template package. There is nothing complicated to install; the new installer adds everything you need.  The themes are all visible under a tab, in the template’s administration area. Select one of the Impression’s themes you want to use or customize, make it default, and your ready to go.

We have 3 more templates to port over to the new code. Focus, Flux and Simply Aluminum will be available again, very soon. We also have many new templates that will be released in the near future.

Handy Measuring Tool for Web Design
Written by Wordsmith
Quite often, while designing a website, button or graphic I need to know the size of an existing graphic or width of a particular space. The Firefox add-on, MeasureIt, is a very handy tool for determining the size in pixels.

First you'll need to download the add-on tool from: Add-ons for Firefox

By clicking on the measuring tape button, located on the status bar or toolbar, a measuring tape tool appears, allowing you to click and drag a ruler box around a graphic, space or any element on a webpage. The ruler box shows the width and height in pixels.

To nudge the ruler box hold the CTRL + Arrow Keys to nudge the ruler by one pixel. CTRL + Shift + Arrow Keys will nudge the ruler by 5 pixels. To move the ruler box just click, hold and drag.

Understanding the Structure of Your Website
Written by Wordsmith
The website has two basic parts, the Frontend and the Backend. The Frontend is the website that the public sees on the Internet. The Backend is the administration area for modifying the website, adding content and managing users. Both the Frontend and Backend reside on the hosting server and are accessible on the Internet through a web browser.

Joomla utilizes a database to organize and store all of the content that you add to the website. A hierarchy is set up to organize the data. A Section is created first, such as News, directly under that is a category. The category might be website news and then the actual content, or article, is stored under the category.

An example of content is any written documents or graphics that you add to the website. As you add content you will need to choose the type or section such as news, FAQs, blog or articles that the content item will be stored under. This is how Joomla categorizes the content and knows where to put each item.

You can add new sections and categories as needed, at any time, as well as refining the organization by adding categories under each section.

The only limit to the amount of Content that can be added is the amount of storage space you have purchased with the hosting site.
